Audi tech , reason for oil usage
I on the other hand have no oil consumption. I bought my car with 65k and now have 77k. I do use synthetic every 5K and have a new Forge DV. I wondered if i pushed the oil changes till 7500 like other people do, if i would see it....But I'll stick with 5K intervals.
Also my previous car was a 1994 BMW 325is. Bought it with 78K and sold it with 170,000! 6 years later to my friend. He now has 205,000. Never added oil. Ran synthetic the whole time. I think it also depends on the car and driver and how its cared for.

My A4 does not use any oil, and I don't exactly baby it. My 96 Grand Am with the 2.4 quad 4 could use up to 3/4 of a quart every 2000 miles. When I complained to GM they said that up to 2 quarts every 4000 miles was totally acceptable. For those who live in an area with emission testing, which I don't, I wander how much oil has to be consumed before a car might start to fail emission tests.
the very few people with problems blog here. and the reason for the failure is often because of the user (ie. busted DV because of higher boost from aftermarket chip). the happy consumers don't chime in and blog that everything is ok. so it's misleading to state all cars have these problems.
keep it in perspective.

no aftermarket here...mine is stock. i am a happy consumer and dont mind adding the oil and do it all the time...is it an issue???..... i love my car so dont care or worry about adding the oil as it keeps my eye on the engine. the black soot on my exhaust (that non audi owners always point out to me) give me the perception that a majority of the b7 a4's have this issue/problem...a minority dont. go figure :-)
Take it from an old fart, oil consumption of one quart in 4,000 miles is VERY MINOR! The 2.0T engine seems to be using it through the valve guides, at a very minor rate. Back in the day (late 60's), we had to change oil every 2 to 3 thousand miles, and acceptable oil consumption was a quart every 1,000 miles. We called it "upper end lubrication" and lived with it. We would actually accept slight white smoke on start up as evidence of minor guide weepage, and look at it as a good thing. My A4 2.0T uses about a quart or less in 7,500 miles, which I think is just dandy. That's about a penny a mile for some extra protection of the upper rings and cylinders. Like I said, I'm an old fart and think the oil useage is a non-issue.
every 10 k. that's the problem. you obviously don't care too much about your engine. i change it every 5 k and i never have problems. a naturally aspirated engine i can understand longer oil change frequencies but don't cheap out on maintenance on turbo'd engines.
Well my A4 I bought new in '07 has had almost no problems (knock on wood). I have only had the PCV go bad (27tmls) and 2 coil packs. As far as oil burning, this is almost a non issue for me. I think I have put 1/2 Qt in for every 6-7tmls. Keep in mind I drive the German Autobahns a lot and my average speeds are between 80 to 110mph. The German Audi mechanics here have almost never heard of a lot of the problems I see on this forum (and others). Carbon build up is a non-issue with the German 2.0T's more on the 3.2FSI's, this could be because the Germans drive their A3/A4/A6's in excess of 120mph often so it burns it off. Anyway I am quite happy with my little A4!
OK I just got a call from my daughter and after 1900 miles she needed to add a quart of oil. I did our 1st oil change at 32,200 miles which was 5000 miles after the dealer change. I'm using Castrol 5W-40 Syn which meets the Audi/VW requirement. We do like the car , handling , performance and creature features but I'm still disappointed with the oil usage. As an old fart I remember the days when a quart per 1000 miles was considered great but I still don't buy this . I guess it's something my daughter has to keep an eye on. By the way I have been doing my own personal survey and so far out of 12 people I've asked 6 get 1500 miles/qt and the rest get around 2200 miles. I guess it's just part of the breed.
