Best Engine Oil and Weight?
I cant tell you about the brand, but you really should be running the recommended 5W 40. Turbos run hotter, and need the 40 weight that withstands heat better than the 30 weight. Also If you car is a CPO, and the dealer discovers you using any other weight oil, they may try to refuse coverage for a repair. The dealer could try to link your using improper oil viscosity to the damage or need for the repair, causing you to get burned and having to pay for the repair yourself.
Look up VW 502 approved oils.
Don't use anything else. No kidding, you WILL screw up the passages. I use Gernam Castrol 0-W30 or Mobil One 0-W40. The Castrol seems to work a little better (less consumption), but is sometime more difficult to find. There are other VW 502 Approved Oils, but the two I mention are all I have been able to find consistently.

i'm not sure where you live but if you have cold winters, use 0W-40 mobil 1 during the cold months. during the summer hot months, use 5W-40. i just use the castrol syntec 5W-40 for lack of better VW 502 approved products available.
I live in CT USA. This is my first car and i saw that Audi's have oil issues. I have not been eating up oil from what i can see been checking it. No matter what tho i have black tail pipes. thanks for the winter oil tip.
clarification: i use the castrol syntec 5W-40 for lack of better VW 502 approved and readily available products.
if the turbo does burn off more than normal amounts of oil, there will be a low oil level light that will come on. my warning light only came on twice. i was using mobil 1 0W-40-both times during the summer and at the end of the oil change interval. both times were also after very fast and long highway trips. i plan to take my own advice and use the 5W-40 over the summer. i change the oil every 5000 miles. turbos are tough on oil. i always carry a spare quart in the trunk. some oil will vaporize when it comes into contact with the extremely hot turbo bearings. don't go more than 5000 miles for oil changes.
as for the black tail pipes, that could be due to the high flow cats and the conservative, rich tune. i used to have a heavily modded mustang (heads, cams, intake, exhaust, chip, etc) with no oil consumption issues and after i added the mods, my back bumper had alot of black soot dots on it. at start up and idle, the low temperature cats don't process the unspent fuel and you end up with the soot. a more restrictive cat could possibly reduce the amount of soot at startup.

I breathe Mobile 1 as far as brand. I have never had any major engine failure in about 10 cars with long milage history by me beating the crap out of them. I started in the mid 1990's using it and have never broke a motor. I find that pretty damn good. These are floggings as well i give to my cars. Good luck or Good oil?
I also use the Audi / VW recommended 10K change interval as most don't trust it i'm closing in on my second Audi at nearly 100K doing this.
