Cruise control actually wastes gas. The reson being is because on a downhill it will ease off the gas to maintain speed and hammer down on the uphill. When I'm driving and using cruise, I'll maintain the same engine speed on the downhill and evem add a little pressure to speed the car up so that it can coast farther without losing as much speed on the uphill, thereby maintaining a good momentum and not using so much gas. With regards to fuel economy, cruise control is not as good as people think.

Mex,

Everytime you engage and disengage your clutch, you're using it's components. This INCLUDES downshifting, and what's cheaper to replace? Brakes or a clutch?

Think about it.

Quote: i always throw mine in neutral when going down a hill...car rolls super and gains speed. i hope i am saving gas when the rpm meter drops to 800 rpm down a hill.
I'm no tech so can't say for sure with TIP but, in general engine braking (downshifting to slow down) is not a bad thing at all... On steep inclines it is good to keep the brakes cool and engine brake where you can safley.

Just drive that MF till the wheels fall off!
