brake pad wear sensor info
#11
On my last service visit at the dealer they told me my rear pads were at around 4mm and strongly suggested I should replace them. It has been over 5,000 miles since then and I have not yet seen the warning light. Is this possible? Could I have a failure in the warning sensors? i only do city driving, with lots of stops, and I break hard before a turn when I drive "enthusiastically" if you know what I mean. My breaks haven't felt even slightly off from usual, and break pedal feels solid too. To the naked eye it looks like I should change them soon, but what's the easiest way to check more precisely? Is there a tool for this?

Also, your fronts do the lion's share of the braking. It's not uncommon to replace fronts twice for every rear change.

Oh yeah, I know the fronts take the heat, I didn't know the rears didn't have sensors though, that's some excellent info. Thanks. I'll try to get it to the dealer this week, and hopefully they won't charge me an arm and a leg for it.

Well, that depends on what you consider an arm and a leg. I don't know about the rears, but they quoted me $580 or so just for the fronts. That's highway robbery, if you ask me.

That it is, sir. But there are dealers and dealers. The 2 I've been going to are very fair usually and naturally I tried to make friends with their service advisers so they remember my face, so.. I'll let you all know how it goes. I'd hate to have to do them myself, I don't exactly have a shop, so it'll take a large chunk of weekend time.

I've got a friend with his own shop. He said if I bring him the parts, he'll do it for $50-75. He charged me $20 to change my DV (would've taken me at least an hour assuming I could even get in there to get to it). I love that guy.
I just need to figure out what rotors to get. Locally everyone wants at least $100/rotor and on ECSTuning.com, I'm so confused by the options out there. Bare bones, coated, premium, big brake kit. I can't decide.

Thanks for all your help. I finally gave up wasting my time locally and ended up ordering some decent looking Meyle rotors from ECSTuning.com for $114/pair shipped. I was going to just get the Akebono Euro pads from them too, but I found Place For Brakes (Brake Pads, Brake Rotors - Best Deals on EBC, Brembo Kits and more | Place for Brakes) had them for $85 with free shipping and couldn't pass that up!
All-told, $200 even for the parts.
