Unhappy CAR SOUNDS LIKE DIESEL Camshaft position sensor a circuit range P0341 CODE and P0016

My girlfriend owns a B7 series A4 (2007) and was driving home from work the other night and hit some standing water she couldnt really see on an elevated onramp (but with concrete barriers on the sides) to the highway during a storm. The car hit the water fairly hard and it threw a check engine light .
Later on when she was arriving home the car sounded like a diesel. So she parked the car and it sat there a couple days till my mechanic friend and I could look at it tonight, we pulled a couple codes P0016 timing correlation and P0341 CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR A CIRCUIT RANGE/PERFORMANCE (BANK 1 OR SINGLE SENSOR)

We checked the plug to see if it was getting 5 volts where the cam sensor was in the front and it was getting 5 volts. we then cleaned the cam sensor as well and put it back in. then we checked the cam follower and although worn it looked ok and no hole in it. any other ideas ? she just started the claims process this evening after that diesel sounding consistent knock is still there. if the sensor went bad it wouldnt crank over at all.. correct and would it even cause the diesel knocking sound (fairly loud) towards the back of the motor it seems .
