Car starts with "OK" in yellow - but when "check" pressed shows 2 items in RED

It sounds to me like you're manually running the "check" cycle by pressing the wrench button. This may very well display the results in a different color than the post-startup test others are talking about that displays "OK" in green.
I have a 2006, so my whole display is only red and yellow and none of this applies to me.

No, I know the wrench does a scroll through, but I was pressing the "check" button and was worried that I saw oil & coolant in RED and the OK was in yellow - I now understand that I will never see it in green as I don't have the multi-color display (sigh...) and that it's normal for those to show up in red, as long as they disappear...so I feel better now - thank you all for putting a stop to my sweat !!

I just changed the oil so I know that's not it. And it has coolant even though it's a little old so I'll possibly change it. Is it my sensors? I have an 06 a4
