Default to cat, or not to cat

my emissions is going to be done this month and afterwards i am thinking about going catless

questions:

has anyone gone catless, what do you like about it; not like about it; performance wise?

is being illegal worth it?

big difference in sound?

have u installed it yourself?

thanks guys!

I have done this on my Jetta 04 GLI that got totaled.
Spooled up much faster, got a check engine light on afterwards, had to install a spacer that placed the O2 sensor farther out of the airstream in the cat itself, not sure if the A4 will be the same problem.???

The sound,,,,I thought it sounded great!,just a slight low rumble & idle,& not obnoxtiously (SP) loud @ W.O.T. wide open throttle.

You will smell the unburned fuel more.

Not worth the fine if you get caught. Pretty pricey$$$$$

A cat is like having another muffler. So removing it made it sound better,,,,but if you go w/a big exhaust pipe like 3" & a straight through muffler/s out back,,,,it will be loud,IMO,,too loud.

Running two 2.1/4" pipes w/two straight through mufflers & no cat should sound pretty good.

The stock mufflers on my 08 A4,looks to be pretty much straight through ,but has a bend inside, but no baffles that causes the exhaust to change directions.

The APR mufflers are 2 1/4" straight through design from what an APR spokes person told me via Email.

Hope this helps a little.

Sorry different car but basically the same engine.

The spacer I had is simular to this one: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4335899

You can disconnect the car battery & it should reset?

At least it did on my VW.

Some of the chips also have a cat-delete file that will take care of the CEL.

Buy a catless Downpipe that you can swap the stocker back in at emmission time. Get an APR or REVO tune and you will be automaticly stage 2 with the downpipe and the chip will make your light go away. That simulator / spacer is not gauranteed to work and does not work on some cars.

I have a catless DP on my GTI and APR tune. (HOLY **** is all I can say to that)
