Chief mechanic (dad) did 1st oil
Well I did my 1st A4 2.oL oil change and I guess I expected something a little different. Went on line to see the procedure and the site I looked at was pretty straight forward. I was not totally impressed with the German design of having to remove a dozen fasteners to take off the plastic under tray. Also as I questioned before the oil filter (canister type) seemed to be a step backwards from the spin-on type. Using a 36MM socket makes the removal easy but there was no instruction that told you to remove the plug to the suspension mount. I guess it is obvious but from a design perspective it should not have been located there. Engine guy didn't talk to the suspension guy. I drained the filter housing but I guess not enough (I know better now) . I'll get the drain tube kit which will make the future change a little cleaner. I see the previous mechanic didn't care that he got oil on the cross member. After a clean up and inspection I buttoned everything up. Oh on the oil drain plug I got a copper washer from VW but the drain plug had a shrink washer already on it. I just added the copper washer and tightened it up. The whole process took 2 1/2 hrs but there was added time to clean up some old oil on the frame and repair the under tray where someone damaged it. All is well and now we'll do an oil burn evaluation and see what that looks like.
Knowing that I have the proper level and writing down the mileage I can now see how much oil this will burn . Wen we bought the car at 27K miles we didn't get a chance to see the oil usage based on my daughters style of driving. We'll check it every 1000 miles and see when the 1st quart gets burned. Simple test.
