Default Diagnosis?: Fuel Pressure Outside Specification

Hey Guys,

VAG is coming back with fault 012555 - Low Pressure Fuel Regulation: Fuel Pressure Outside Specification
P310B -008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

Redmond Werkshop stated it *could* be wearing of cams that run the mechanical fuel pump and requires cam replacement. They indicated the fuel pump in tank is usually dead or not dead, it doesn't fire intermittent faults. I have changed the oil every 5k with synth and with 47k cam wearing sounds implausible.

Just wondering if any of you have seen this, it's going in tomorrow for a more thorough diagnosis.

2005.5 A4 Avant 2.0T
6spd Manual
Sport Pak
Lighting Pak
Audio Pak
Black on Black
47698 Miles

Thanks,
Andy

More than one dealership I talked to mentioned that cam follower failure can happen at low miles. The few cars they saw with the problem were still under the original factory warrenty when the follower failed. There are to many variables to name as to why some possibly fail sooner than others.

Yep sounds like the "common" cam follower failure b7night is talking about. Your cam follower sits above your cam and right below the fuel pump so chances are your follower is worn beyond its limits and causing low fuel pressure. The follower isn't very hard to do, took me about 45 mins without every doing it before. There are a few DIY's out there and the part itself is pretty cheap, <40$ or so

THanks Guys....CEL was cleared and came back on, then on it's own mysteriously cleared. It went 3 weeks or so but is back on.

Local shop was not sure what to do with it, said talk to dealer or Audi USA....what a pain.

I like the idea of DIY, i've done a bit of work over the years but always on my older cars, always stayed away from the Audi. I'll see what it involves.

I'll keep this thread posted with my findings...since I Have one of hte first A4s with 2.0T (2005.5) it may become more common to diagnose.

well first thing is first..... have you had your CL recall done, was your car eligible...? Replacement of the low side fuel pressure sender. 310b is the trigger fault for that recall.
Generally when your cam follower fails you will see other faults and encounter performance issues.

The follower is a design flaw. The replacement follower has a teflon like coating making it stronger and durable. It will eventually fail in every car.

And if you replace your follower...... you need to know how to properly inspect your cam for damage. Cause if you follower shows signs of wear you can almost guarantee your cam lobe started to round over as well

I did not receive any info (I'm original owner) for the CL recall, what is CL? To your point there are no noticable impacts to this fault and it is the ONLY fault listed the last two checks from VAG.

I'm going to make a call to the dealer where I bought the car to check on recalls. I know I am eligable for the sunroof drain recall and haven't had that addressed yet.

Thanks again I feel like i'm getting somewhere on this ;-)

CL is just a letter combination code. doesn't stand for anything i know of.
It was just to replace the low side sensor, because of its tendency to fail.
If your the original owner and you brought your car into the dealer, they are supposed to look up your VIN for open recall to be performed while your getting service.

The sunroof drain thing isn't much of a big deal for your car. they just run a snake down your drains and make sure your cowl under the battery isn't getting filled with debris that could potentially flood your car with water.

If you PM me your VIN i can look up your repair history / recall info

i would change your follower to be on the safe side...... ive never heard of a recall for that...g410 sensor or the cel?.... this is new to me but would like info if anyone else is got it........ive delt with this prob for a while and i have no cam (cam follwer probs ). and you really shouldnt with a 50k or under car.... i would... if u research it enough u can change alot of things thatwill result in a cel. trigger for fuel pressure.....my car drove find and everything was tip top. but when it came down to it it was the pump................... not doing its job enough i guess...... that did it for me..
