High oil consumption after 75k service
I have a 2005 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro 6 speed manual with approximately 75k miles on it. I purchased this car used in 2008 with approximately 30k miles on it. I’ve had very few issues with it until just recently. I recently had it in to the dealership for a 75k mile service (oil change, throttle body cleaning, etc.), 2 Audi campaigns (pressure control valve change & fuel pressure sensor replacement), replacement of all three engine mounts (not surprising as I live in New Orleans and the streets are deplorable), and incidentally replacement of a vacuum pipe which they had claimed was damaged while they did the other work (not sure exactly which pipe this was). I noticed after I got my car back for a few days initially that upon cold startup I would see a small puff of smoke come from the exhaust and then nothing. In addition to that intermittently upon higher acceleration rates the engine had a strange feeling like it wasn’t all there (both from a stop and at highway speeds). This even happened a couple times upon starting from a complete stop and the car would almost lurch from acceleration to the complete lack thereof. It’s very difficult to explain but it felt very much like on my previous car (also a turbo) when a vacuum hose was on its last legs and would collapse starving the engine for air and then as soon as I let up a bit it was ok again. This only happened a few times and then went away ever since. I called Audi about the puffs of smoke and they told me it could be some “residual” left over from the throttle body cleaning and should go away shortly. I don’t recall exactly when this issue went away but it seemed that within a few days it had stopped. Within a week however I got a low oil level warning and added some oil. The next morning I left for a week of vacation and the evening I got back the low oil level warning light came on again within a few miles (I had not topped up my oil before so this may or may not be indicative that it is somehow losing oil even when not running). I of course added more oil and stopped by the dealership the next day to have them top me up and make arrangements to drop my car off for diagnosis. I noted at the time that it appeared there was oil gathering in the drip pan and may have been leaking from the filter or the drain plug. It was 5 days between when I made my appointment and the day of and as I pulled up to the dealership the low oil level warning light came on again. When I got it back they informed me that the oil pan drain plug gasket had been leaking and was replaced. This seemed like a reasonable explanation as I had dealt with this issue before on my previous car that I worked on myself…seems like they should replace that gasket every time they change the oil. I fully expected this to be the end of my woes. It was not. The next day I was driving and before the engine had fully heated up I accelerated from a stop pretty quickly to a high RPM and a very large cloud of smoke came out of the tailpipe. Before I got to my destination there was one more puff of smoke (much smaller) at a lower speed and much lower RPM. I’ve not seen any smoke since then (5 days ago) however now 6 days after I got my car back from the dealership with topped up oil I got another low oil level warning on my way home from work today. Can anyone offer any insight into what may be going on? I’m very concerned that I may have a major problem with my engine yet at the same time it seems awfully strange that I’ve never had any problems before and then all of a sudden after they do a bunch of work on the car I’m suddenly going through oil left and right and have these intermittent smoke events from my exhaust. Sorry for the long story but I didn’t want to leave anything out as I know every detail can be a clue.
