I am posting here on behalf of my father, whose car suddenly showing the oil light not only lost power and smoked when attempting to accelerate, but has at the very same time lost most of its braking ability.

If it had not been for the brakes we might have thought it the turbo, but the brakes as well confuses matters, any ideas?

Could be a major vacuum leak (effecting the brake booster) combined with a bad turbo. I'd get it scanned for trouble codes. I wish I could help more, but here in the states we don't get the tdi A4 b7....
