Post Timing Belt Work

I know that this topic has been brought up before, but wanted to update people/inquire about what they've heard. I just got my 75,000 mile service done at the Audi dealer near me. I drive a 2007 A4 2.0T 6 speed s line. They said they have to recommend getting the timing belt and stuff done at 75k, to get it in your head about being done soon. They said definitely by the next service it should be done. I've heard about the 06's getting a letter that it was changed from 75 to 105/115. I asked the dealer about that and they said Audi had a lot of issues after that and recently changed it back to 75k.

Has anyone heard anything like this? The dealer says it will be at least $1,200 for the service! I have a local audi friendly guy that quoted me at $900. I'm curious also if you'd trust a local mechanic, because I bet they'd do it for $600-750 range. I'd like to hold out longer, but don't want to take a chance of ruining the engine. It was driven mostly highway miles, so I feel like that might make a difference too. Your thoughts!?

Default Timing belt

Don't know where you're located but I have '06 A4 CVT 2.0L in Atlantic Canada. Car has 116,000K and I called the dealer last week about timing belt as they had told me it was at 115,000K that it should be chnaged. Now they said Audi recently chnaged that to 165,000K. Note this is kilometers not miles. I heard in US the recommended change is at 165,000 miles!!...but in Canada the weather is harsher so a lower change point. They also said after about 6 or 7 years.

This is what they said.

Good luck

Better safe than sorry. If your timing belt fails, you'll be in the market for a new engine. I've always heard that it should be switched at around 80K. I'd trust a local mechanic as long as it's a mechanic who is specific to German cars or Audi.

In the USA the manual for the 2006 2.0t said, 75,000 miles. This was later updated to 115,000 miles. It makes me think someone made a mistake orignially since 75,000 miles is the same as 115,000 kilometers. I'm guessing someone didn't proofread the manual well before release and assumed that the 115,000 was in kilometers and not miles and then converted the mileage to the 75,000 number.

If you read the documentation that was released to the Audi/VW techs, it goes into detail about how the belt and pulley teeth were redesigned to cause much less wear than the setup on the 1.8t, that had to be changed at 90,000 miles. This new design could go longer between belt changes. Problem is, until people start reporting the mileage when their belts start failing under normal use, we don't know exactly how many miles the belts really get until failure. If you're lucky, you will have a late 07 or and 08, and can get an idea of when the 05.5 and 06 models start having trouble so that you can plan accordingly.

Yeah..the problem is I'm a little ahead of the curve already having 77,000 miles on my '07, but I'm sure there are some '06's out there with that many or more. I think at this point I'm going to wait until around 95,000 miles. I think Audi is just trying to upsell. They told me I needed new brakes when I was there for 75,000 miles too, but I got a second opinion and they said I was good for at least another 10,000 miles.

If anyone hears anything please update me.

My front pads and rotors needed replacing at 73,000 miles. You are fine until the brake pad symbol showes up when you start the car. The sensors in the pad trigger that symbol, in plenty of time to make an appointment and get them fixed.

I changed out my belt and water pump at 115,000. My indie mechanic told me to do it at 75,000 but I also received that same update to the manual and I figured I'd wait. I do mostly highway driving (600 miles/week) and that definitely is in your favor IMHO. I'm close to 190,000 and I'll probably go ahead and change out everything again at 200,000 just for extra insurance. My indie charged $800 for doing both the water pump and the belt...and he was upset about charging me so much but he said the labor involved was crazy (had to take the bumper off). My local dealer was going to charge $1400.

It is crazy how much of the car has to be taken apart. My sister had a Passat which at the time was based on the A4 platform. The sticker shock for the work was so bad, that she got rid of the car just before the belt change was due. She had been planning on keeping it a little past that mileage, but didn't want to put in all the money unless she was going to keep it for a long time. It's scary what has to be removed. Basicaly everything in front of the engine. AKA bumper, radiator, etc. By the way, Audi modified the maintenance chart again. The timing belt change is now 110,000 miles.

after purchasing my 07 a4, i consulted an audi technician about getting said services done, and since i am a tech i will be doing the work myself, he said just do it at 105. thats what they do it at the audi dealer. the job is pretty strait forward if you have ever done a timing belt before, just have to put the old audi in service mode to get to everything easier.

Just had the water pump replaced on my 2006 A4 2.0. First the service writer told me I should pick up the timing belt and they will put the new belt on when they change the pump ( the pump is under warr.) SO I brought the belt with mme then they call and say no the belt doesnt get touched when the water pump is changed and wanted to know if I wanted to pay the extra labor to do the timing belt. I told them no thank you. When I picked up the car the service ticket specifically states remove timing belt reset cam and reinstall timing belt. Dont have the service manual for the car yet because it is still under warr. Only has 67,000 miles on it. I have a feeling the dealer is playing games does the timing belt get removed to replace the water pump on this model?
