Definatly get the quattro. I've driven both FWD and quattro in snow. No comparison. The FWD was just a bigger verion of my terrible in the snow Jetta I had. I have a manual, but have driven the automatic. It upshifts quickly in the lower gears. I found it annoying enough to put the car in sport mode, until I hit my cruising speed.
