I will be doing a 100 mile roundtrip commute a few days a week and wanted to upgrade my reliable Golf to a heavier and more exciting A4. I was going to plump for a diesel as I wanted something fuel efficient although fun to drive. Budget will probably get me a 2009/2010 model.

Given the commute and the offset pedals, wanted an automatic. Annoyed that the A4 saloon 2.0 TDI 170 BHP does not come in auto, so was debating between the 2.0 TDI 143 BHP (ok but not mindblowing) and the 2.7 TDI.

Was also thinking S Line over the SE.

Thoughts? I have seen the odd negative comment about the autos?

the new (2011+) vw jetta diesels can go 700+ km in the city on one tank. i would think the a4 diesel (2.0) would have similar milage.
