Oil Consumption -- ???
#11
Same thing here.. my '09 A4 goes thru about a quart every 2500 or so. No big deal really. We should always keep close tabs on engine oil anyway.
I'll admit though.. the lack of a dipstick bugs me! Depending on what my in-car screen says the oil level is just seems wrong..
Interestingly enough, my daughters MkV GTI with the 2.0t doesn't burn a drop..

You can buy a dip stick for this engine. I got one for my kids car.

Here's what a local Audi contact told me - let me know how rare you guys think the cases are. The way I see things huge oil consumption is considered normal and their certification will only advise that swilling oil is normal.
"My name is X and I will be your Audi Brand Specialist. I received your inquiry about the 2009 A4. And you pose a great concern that maybe I can help you out with your decision.
Usually in these forums which I do read, sometimes alot of problems are due to pepole not knowing how to read the correct oil level through the MMI.
Audi says it is okay to burn up 1qt of oil every 1,200 miles. That seems to only be in rare cases. If a vehicle does burn more oil then this, Audi will make the determination of a necessary repair + then it will be performed. If you purchase a certified pre-owned car in this case, more than likely any resulting repair would be covered with you just owing your $85 deductible.
Again, this does not occur with every car, so keep that in mind as well."

Guess I'm thinking screw an Audi unless someone can give me some input. They're positioning to screw me - I have a 14 year old BMW 328 w/200k and countless track miles that barely burns noticeable amounts of oil in 5000 mi. Just beat the daylights out of it on a 5 hr drive at 85 - 90 mph passing full throttle at 100 to 110 and did not see a noticeable drop in oil. That's 10 hrs of crazy time. Want to go Audi but everything I read says don't do it.
Why should I?

I have a 2011 A5 2.0 TFSI, the first quart was at 4,970 miles! Since then I have put on about 45,000 miles and now use 6.34 qts over 8,978 miles! This car uses so much oil it should not require any oil changes as at the time of oil change it appears I am dumping mostly new oil. The specified Audi consumption tests are BS, as with monitoring my oil consumption I have only fell under the tolerance once in 12 times, there is not luck in getting below the stated tolerance. Any ideas on if getting a independent shop to perform a cylinder leak down test would serve any purpose?
Thanks, Kevin
