It is a fairly low inertia turbo that produces boost fairly quickly. It seems that by 2000 RPM, it is pretty well on boost. Have you searched for an afermarket boost gauge that fits the new 2.0?

They make some pretty nice guages that can be "temporarily" mounted with little if any resdiual damage when removed.
I think Audi got away from the gauges as they didn't want to scare people away with an overly complex car. A lot of drivers don't know or care what is under the hood (mouse wheel, rubber bands, nuclear reactor) just as long as the car goes when they push the accelerator. For the enthusiasts, we have to add what we like or can...
