The 2013 Audi R3?
The Audi R4 is dead, but can we expect to see an Audi R3?
The announcement was made months back that the design plans for the Audi R4, which was supposed to be a mid-engine, and possible a roadster, were placed on the backburner. However, with the announcement that Volkswagen will be bringing a new mid-engine model to the LA Auto Show in November, there are rumors that this platform could be shared to offer the new Audi R3.
This new R3 would replace the Audi TT, and the new drivetrain formation would definitely give the TT replacement an identity of its own, as the once popular TT has faced some criticism over time for its styling and performance capacities. It is expected that the R3 will only offer four cylinder engines, at first at least, with power ranging from 180 to 280 horsepower depending on the trimline, and there could even be a few diesel models, especially for European sales. The goal in the initial engine offerings is to make this sporty model as attractive as possible, but without taking too much attention from the Porsche Boxter.
The November debut of the VW mid-engine concept may give us a look into the future of this possible new R3, as if the reception is a positive one, VW expects the new model of theirs to hit showrooms in 2013, with the Audi models being introduced shortly thereafter.
