Default 1988 Quattro starting hard

Hey, I have a 1988 Quattro 200 that you have to crank over for around 10 seconds before it'll start. It doesn't seem to be very consistent either, cause sometimes it starts right away and others it has to crank forever, but I can't seem to see any pattern. In other words, it starts hard 95% of the time, and then for no reason it'll start easy once or twice and then back to starting hard. Any ideas for what I can check is great cause when it comes to fuel injection systems, I have little experience.

Oh and a small back log on the car, its actually an '88 Quattro 90 but with a motor out of a 200. Slant 5 2.2 liter, turbo with a 5 speed manual. its been a lot of peoples project car over the years so everybody as screwed with it and now has a lot of little problems. starting hard being the foremost, so I'm beginning with it.

Have you checked or replaced spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor and filters? Other things to check are fuel pressure and injectors o-rings. Do you have good compression?

The 200 has a fuel accumulator just in front of the right rear wheel. When they go bad they release the pressure when the car is off and it delays starting. You can try turning the switch on a waiting a minute before starting.

It might help only if your Audi does not have crank rotation fuel pump interlock.
