Default 94 Audi CS 100 Quattro

My problem started with a trany problem that the shift lever would not lock into park. You can move it out of park just by moving the lever. The car would crank but not start. I would mess with the shift lever and then it would fire up. Transmission mechanics asy the trany problem has nothing to do with it not wanting to start. Twice I had to have it towed after not wanting to start and after a ride on the tow truck it would start right up and the mechanics could not dx the problem if there was no problem. I would pick it up and drive it for a while and it would do the cranking and not start thing more frequently. One mechanic told me to hit the gas tank if it did it again and if it started it was the fuel pump. It did and I did and it started. After sitting for a while it wouldn't start again no matter how much I banged on the tank. I had the fuel pump replaced and it started and then wouldn't. The mechanic said it wasn't getting and spark. Also during this time the battery got low and after an hour of charging tried to start and the started went bad. Said he smelt a burning smell and then the car would just click. Starter replaced and it worked for a while then started doing the whole cranking but not starting again. This time he said it was some ignition module that costs $400.00 but he doesn't want to replace that yet because it is starting again.
This is the last I've heard from him, it is continuing to start. Whats my problem. The car has about 145,000 miles on it. never had a problem till now.

Default Engine?

Do you have the V6 or the 5 cylnder? I had some starting issues with a '90 90 CS and it had the 5cylnder. The problem was a vacuum leak. When it is not starting, do you hear a sucktion sound coming from the the engine compartment? if so, then you might have a bad connection or a cracked hose somewhere. It could also be a crack in the intake manifold, the Black rubber thing that is attacthed to the throttle body. It could also be the silver fuel regulator that had all the fuel lines running into it. They go bad from time to time. And are not very cheap. Good luck, hope this helps.
