Default How to replace the starter motor? Audi 100 2,0L

My starter motor is so worn down that it won't "grip" the flywheel (right?), and I'm thinking about replacing it.

Is it a difficult job?
I've located it, and I have some experience from other cars, just not with the starter motor, so I thought I'd ask just to make sure I didn't do anything wrong, damaging the engine.
Is it simply a detach --> attach job?
Any screw-ups possible when connecting?

Btw
I've got the Haynes manual, but I just can't seem to find it described anywhere?
Anyone seen anything in there? A page nr. would be of great help...

Thanks

First, Haynes Manual, for what years? They do not seem to print one for the "89-91". If you have one, where from?

Second, no, it is not hard. I think 3 wires on it, hot, large, from the Bat, 2 push on spade connectors, for the solenoid.

The bolts, however, can be a bitch. You don't look at what you are doing, you feel the socket, and flex adapters, onto the rear one, up in some ribbing in the transaxle housing.

IIRC, the bottom one is bolt into a threaded hole, the top is bolt with nut.

You can do it. Not at all difficult, compared to some of the gyrations you have to go through for other repairs.

If yours is an '84-'88 manual, page 313, section 10, pics on the same page.

If you actually do have an '89-'91 manual, please give me a number and source of supply.

Cheers,

George

Stonescar,

That ISBN # got me a whole bunch of hits at Amazon and Barnes and Noble, starting with "Left Behind", a religious fiction book. Can't find a book that is 82-90 Audi 100.

You sure of the numbers?

Your book should have an in-out description of the starter. If not, you want me to scan, e-mail the pages out of my "up to 88" book?

Cheers,

George

Greetings, n00b with a 91, 100 replacing my first starter. Having troubles latching on to the top bolt assy with a 17mm, which is the bolt size of the bottom bolt on the Audi 100 starter. Can anyone verify the bolt size for the difficult top?

I found another useful howto replace an Audi starter here.

Btw, pg. 313, sec. 10, Haynes 84-88 shows the following 4 steps
<quoteBook>
1. Disconnect battery.
2. Note location of starter wires, disconnect.
3. Unscrew mounting bolts, withdraw starter motor.
4. Refitting is a reversal of removal, but make sure that the mating faces are clean and tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque.
</quoteBook>

Okay, as you know my dilema, it would be nice to know bolt sizes, I understand they could vary by year..
But what about torque for the bolts, would they vary by year, it would be nice if the book said that too.

sorry for the rant..

Thanks everyone!!

Regards,
BrianT.

2 months later, forget torque specs, with starter bolts. Unless you think you are strong enough to wring off approx. 1/2 inch bolts, just tighten them as much as you can.

Head bolts, crankpin bearing bolts, yeah, use a torque wrench, don't go UNDER the specs. OVER the spec by 10 will be way better than 10 UNDER the specs.

I think my Diesel Audi speced to tighten in sequence to XX pounds, then again to XX pounds, then, finally, another 1/4 turn, no spec as to the final torque.

1,000 mile, retighten.

I really wonder if the new engines, the V-6 and 8 are made as well as the 4's and 5's. They were the same as the Diesel, STRONG, with smaller bearings for gas engines.

Do they MAKE a European 6 or 8 cylinder Diesel?

Cheers,

George

17mm and the two bolt heads do not face the same way.
After finding the bolt heads on opposite sides of each other, the replacement went smoothly.

On my 1999 A6 Q the bolts were 16mm. Had to go to Sears last night to buy the socket. One threads in from the front into the engine frame and the other from the back into the starter flange. To get to the back one you need to take off the passenger side tire.
