Anyone familiar with the causes behind the gear selector display lighting up? The vehicle is a 2002 A6 Avant Quattro auto trans.

you have the dreaded "limp mode". Do a search and you will find TONS of information about what may be the problem. Not to doom and gloom you but be prepared for something really bad. (or it could be a $20 sensor)

Get a full code read out on your car, I know that transmission issues can cause the gear selectors on the instrument cluster to light up.
