Default Transmission Control Module Problems

Hi,

I have a 2004 Audi A4 Cabriolet which had about 28000 miles on it. In the morning today, my car started normally, but moved very very slowly. I could not feel the engine roar even when I had the accelerator pushed all the way down. None of the lights on my dashboard were flashing. I towed it to the nearest dealership. They say that the TCM has been damaged and needs to be replaced. Please pardon my ignorance about cars, but how would a TCM affect the engine roar when I am parked and I press the accelerator?

Luckily, I have certified warranty which will take care of this repair. However I am surprised that something like this would pop on car with such low mileage. Anybody here has an idea as to what could cause the TCM to fail? Is it just a manufacturing defect? Further could the faulty TCM have affected other parts of the transmission and what further questions should I ask the dealer.

Thanks a lot in advance and I appreciate your help!
Vik.
