I just purchased a Q5 from a Wilmington De dealer. The only vehicle that matched all my requirements in located in the New York area. Their procedure is to send a driver to the other dealer and drive it back to my dealer. This will put approx. 100-150 miles on the car. I'm concerned about any damage that might occur to the car and am not happy with taking delivery of a new car with 100-150 miles on it. The dealer says they do this all the time, and it is OK. I said I wanted it trucked down and they quoted me $350 to do this. I don't have the time to order this from the factory.

What are your opinions on this situation?

Pick it up yourself if you don't want to pay the whopping $350 or trust it in the hands of a dealership employee.

These seem to be pretty typical options when buying a car that your local dealer doesn't have on the lot.

 

Yeah, find someone to drive your 100 - 150 miles to the other dealer to pick it up. every other option its going to cost you alot. $350 for towing your car is actually pretty cheap for 100 miles. i have triple A, and the 1st 7 miles is free, but every other mile will cost $9 each miles . so lets say i want to tow that car with triple A and its 100 miles away. That towing with triple A would cost me ......$837.

 

The dealer I worked at had retired guys that did dealer trades. Very responsible and little to no chance of any "hot rodding" on the way back.

 

Out of curiousity, do any dealers do this with CPO cars? I know it's common with new cars.

 

This is a common practice, and dealer is responsible for the vehicle until it changes hands to you so why worry. Just make sure you go over the car carefully when taking possession of the vehicle. As for the miles, they should even be credited to you, so that new car warranty and if leased, your contractual miles start at the odometer reading you get keys.

Only other option is to find out which dealer and go there yourself. However, if someone comes to a dealership 150 miles away and says its because they are the only ones who have the car you want, be prepared to pay through the nose.

I will go for the pick-up rather than paying again another fee.
