Default 99 A6 suggestions for h/u replacement

I recently got the dreaded "ERR 1" for CD player in my 99 A6 wagon. From what I have read, I think the unit is toast (at least for playing cd's - the radio still works). Does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement unit that a) is not terribly expensive as I am not an audiophile, and b) is able to be installed by someone like myself who has marginal mechanical inclination. Finally, if anyone knows of things to try that can fix the ERR 1 reading, that would be ideal.

Thanks in advance!

You must be talking about the changer. I own a '99 A6 sedan and my CD changer is in cahoots. It does play my CDs, but skips a lot.

I went to eBay to find my replacement and so far so good. It cost me $150 with shipping, but they can cost anywhere from $150 to $200 used.

I don't know which other 3rd party manufacturers make compatible changers. I do believe there is a post somewhere in here that has a cable diagram of the changer cable for the '99 A6. You can use that as a refrence.

I decided to skip messing around with the whole cd changer system and installed a whole new head unit/ reciever. i took it out of my jeep but its an alpine that i run my ipod with. alot simpler than having to run around the car to put different cds in. plus never ever skips.

NO he is not speaking of the CD changer ERR1 code reading. His CD's arent skipping, they are not playing at all. I have an 01 A4.8TQ and i have the same ERR1 reading. I have yet to solve this problem but when you put a CD in any CD burned or Original it tries to play but doesnt. I have the feeling that maybe the laser reader has 2 be cleaned but I still have yet to try that, B4 u go and buy a new head unit try calling your local AUDI service center and see if they can help.
