Default Replacement battery suggestions

Well, I haven't been in an Audi forum since I sold my '98 1.8T to a friend down the street in 2004. It's still going strong for him, but now it needs a new battery (which I had replaced in about 2002, so pretty good lifetime).

Are there any particular non-OEM batteries that I could pick up at Autozone, O'Reilly, etc. for this car? I know I replaced my BMW 325i battery with a Duralast from Autozone last year for about half the price of one from a dealer.

Thanks for any particulars on this!

Optima batteries (or gel cell) are high quality batteries, and are more expensive to manufacture, they also last about 2X-3X as long as a lead acid battery.

Most lead acid batteries are made by Jonhson Controls or Exide, so it really doesn't matter which one of those you buy. The quality should be just about the same, just a different sticker on it.
