Default Bose speaker questions

I have a 2001 A6 2.7T with the Bose Symphony. There are eight speakers (not including the subs). My questions are:
1 - Are the front and rear door speakers on the same channel?
2 - Are they component speakers or are the upper tweeters just capped off?
3 - Personally I think theyhave good sound coming out of them so should I replace them?

I'll be putting in a Kenwood KVT-815, Kenwood DSP (Digital Sound Processor), running through a Kenwood 5-ch amp (959 I think). I guess I just wanted to know if the stock interior speakers will hold up. I'll be running a 10" Audiobahn 600w sub if I can mount it the way I want to. I posted a question about that in another thread. After that, add navigation and XM or Sirius and I'm ready for the road.

No. The system is fully "active" - where there's an amplifier channel for each speaker.

2 - Are they component speakers or are the upper tweeters just capped off?

I'm not sure what you're asking here. There IS a protection capacitor on the tweeters in my system, and this does provide some filtering. IF your car's tweeters are identical to mine, you could wire these speakers in parallel, and connect them to your amplifier. The overall load will be 2 ohms - Bose's standard. Paralleling the speakers will NOT decrease the resistive load because the speakers aren't playing the same frequencies...

3 - Personally I think theyhave good sound coming out of them so should I replace them?

If you think they're good sounding, then don't. Personally, I can't stand them, and would suggest replacing them. Of course your answer will depend on your design requirements:
What do you listen to?
How loud?
What crossover frequencies do you plan on using?
What speakers you heard (besides Bose) that you've liked?
Who's installing the system? What's the installer's skill level?
What's your budget?

CSU - I saw your system and it is bad a$$. When I was younger, I probably would toss everything and start from scratch. Now, I just like loud quality. Meaning I do want it loud, but not enough to rattle my trunk or be heard from a block away. At the same time, keep my quality. So I think the bose will do the job.

When I asked if the tweeters were capped, that's what I meant by the protection capacitor. But I have a question. You said that each speaker was amplified seperately, but capped? So are you saying the the bose system is running an 8-ch amp of some sort? My thought was that they were like component speakers. Where you wire the amp to the mid-bass speaker and then there were wires from the mid-bass to the tweeter via a capacitor. Or are you saying thatit's possible towire them in component style?

I listen to R&B, Rap, Classic, and sometimes Pop.I'm not trying to enter a competition or anything. I just want a decent little quality system. Here's what I'm installing.

KVT-815
Kenwood DSP
Kenwood Musi Keg
Kenwood KAC-959 5-ch amp
Audiobahn 10" Sub
Sirius
Kenwood G510 Navigation

I already have everything above except the navigation. I'll probably be purchasing that soon as I want to install everything at once. I'll be installing the system myself. I've been installing stereos every since it cost me an arm and a leg when I got my very first system installed back in 1988 (telling my age). As far as tuning, I do it by ear. I don't use certain settings or frequencies for anything. I play with it until it sounds the way I want it to.

Since I'm new to this car, I just wanted a heads up as to what to expect before I start tearing it apart. Thanks for your input. It is greatly apprectiated.

I've never tried wiring it another way, but it IS possible...the xover point will have to be fairly high - like 4KHz. Try 70Hz for the transition between the subs and mids...

Looks like you've got the start to an excellent system. You'll be able to correct for all of the Bose short-commings, and if you've got the ears and ability to tune the DSP, should have a good sound-stage. In the future, consider upgrading the Bose speakers. Even entry level component sets will sound better...but I understand trying to keep the car as un-modified as possible...

CSU, thanks for your input.

Sucks that they are running it in 8-channels. It'll be easier for me to wire component style as I don't want to add another amp (although I know it would be worth it)to the picture. I'm trying not to take up a lot, if any, trunk space. As long as they're cappedpretty good, I think it'll suffice. If not, I'll have to bite the bullet and add it. I'm going to attempt to mount the amp to the bottom of the rear deck. We'll see how that goes. I heard thatsomeonemay make a box to fit inside the compartment where the the factory subs are. If so that would be love. If not, I'll have to have one made. I'll have pics once I'm done.
