Well I got my baby awhile ago and I've been wanting to do some diy work. I know eventually I'll get rims and what-not but right now I figured I Would do a little experimenting. First off I'll ask if you think this will work for what it is, even though it really isn't the right application.

I picked up some of that smoke tail light spray paint awhile ago to do the headlights on my old SUV and have plenty left over, well I'm thinking about using it on the chrome insert for the top and bottom grille to make them a few shades darker (kinda like black chrome i guess) and then possibly doing the stock rims. I'm tired of seeing the whole red and black scheme. I'm not bashing anyone who has it because it really does look good, I just wanna but a little different that's all

First off, how well do you think the paint would hold up? Second, how do you think it looks? Decided to do a little photoshop rendering so it's not 100% accurate but you get the idea. Thanks for any input!

Looks pretty sweet in the pic. I'm skeptical of how well the paint is going to hold up, or even cover, as it wasn't formulated for that kind of application.

 

plastidip would work on the trim. For the wheels go to an auto store and get a can color of your preference.

 

Yeah I was questioning that too and the only thing the fine print on the can says it that you shouldn't use it to parts that go about 200ºf or on galvanized metal so it kinda doesn't say I can't? That's usually something that will make me try it either way I figured I would try the stuff on the lower grille trim to see how it holds up first and then go from there. It's Rust-oluem lens tint if that gives you a better idea of what the spray paint is...

pa4ul, I looked up the plasti dip and it looks like it's a rubber-like protective coating? Not sure if I would want to do that to the trim if i want to make it like a black chrome unless I wasn't looking at the right specific type?

My experience with the tinting spray is that over time, without clear coating as well, it will fade. I tinted the stock tails on my old BMW and after 3 months you could barely tell that it was on there.

 

The original look is for sure very cool & impressive but as u want some change you must first make a rough sketch and make changes as u like and then see how it looks.

 

there are a few paint products (i believe duplicolor makes one) that are specificaly for the "black chrome" effect your looking for. That night shades is not the right stuff for the job. It will come out blotchy and you will be dissapointed. Go to your auto parts store and get some of the duplicolor black chrome. Should come out pretty good.

 

I looked up what you were talking about 225cpe it's the two part spray kit called Shadow? Their Black-Out kit. I'll look around this weekend for it and try it on my spare tire first to see how it turns out, if it ends up a fail then I guess I'll either keep stock look or maybe get the graphite wheel coating paint.
