1998 A8 Wheel Experts Question
I have heard that you cannot put staggered rims on the A8's, can anyone confirm this? I am looking at going 19 X8.5 in the front and 19 X 9.5 in the rear, 5 X 112 and 35 offset. Any thoughts?
Also, anyone know how to reset the oil light on the speedomter?

I've heard the same thing for our A4s, and honestly, you can do it. What is important as far as the operation of the Quattro system is that all four wheels have the same rolling circumference. It's easier to have the same circumference when running the same size tire/wheel on each corner. Differences will cause the wheels to rotate at different speeds, and that is said to be what screws up the Quattro. If you stagger your wheels, choose your tires VERY carefully so that your circumferences are as close to identical as possible.

Here's a link to a post where I provided a tire size calculator that I posted awhile back. It allows you to put in different tire/wheel sizes and will show you the change in rolling diameter/circumference, as well as the percentage error you'll see on your speedometer if using them (compared to OEM size). Type in the stock tire size and any particular size you're interested in, and you can see what differences you'll get. Try it for the front tire sizes you're thinking about, and find one as close to OEM as possible. Once you have that size, put that size in as your starting size, and start comparing prosective rear tire sizes until you find one that matches the front tires very closely. Remember that if you used the same size tire front and rear, but on different sized rims (say you ran a 245-40-19 all around, but used the 8.5" front wheels and 9.5" rear wheels), your rolling circumference won't be the same front to rear, since the rear tires will have to be "stretched" an inch wider on the rims, which will lower the sidewalls somewhat.
You definitely CAN stagger your wheels, but you'd be better off probably going with the 9.5" wheels all around - the car will definitely look tough that way, you won't have to worry about differing circumference, and you make it easy to rotate the tires as well. Just my $.02, but either way, do what you prefer - just keep the pitfalls in mind if you do stagger them. Hope it helps.
