Need to acces broken master contol switch, which is permanently engaged (won't lock down).

Here is the rub--everyone says its easy, but the diagram is not real clear on how/where to apply force to pop the switch group. I can't get enough illumination through the access hole to see if I'm pressing on plastic or metal (I assume plastic) and I don't have an interest in breaking anything. The diagram starts with the screwdriver going straight in, but then they seem to turn it vertical.

I have tried the following, all straight in: light force, diligent and greater force, and tapping with a hammer in case the release was frozen--noting budges the assembly. Any help or direction is appreciated as I can't think this is a big deal. Thanks in advance.
