Default 2004 A4 key fob repair

Our main key fob would stop operating the electronic door openers, then would start to work, then stop again. Battery was ok. Dealer said electronic unit needed replaced. We paid the money, get it home, discover they had shoved a new electronic end onto the old key end after apparently filing down the plastic of the key unit to sort of meet the new electronic end, but there is nothing that holds the two sections together and they easily slide apart. The new electronic end has a red panic button which our old unit did not have. The original unit had to be opened by pressing a small button on the side, that is gone now. Can this be fixed??

There are two possible remotes that you could have been sold. They both look the same with 3 buttons plus the red button on the side. For 2003 and older the p/n is 8Z0-837-231-B-01C and for 2004 it's 8Z0-837-231-F-01C, do you the part number that you were sold? If you seperate the key and look at the transmitter portion if it's the 231-F-01C then that part number will be on it. The p/n is not printed on the 03 and older remote.

Do you have a picture of your old remote? The other thing that is strange is the modification to the transmitter portion. There would be no need to do that as both should snap into the flip out key side of it. I wonder if the flip key part has a broken tab and that's why they don't stay together. The car does now unlock as it should with the remote correct?
