2005 S4 Cold Start Whine at ~1600 rpm
I had another thread going. Someone replied its the auxillary drive belt on the front of the motor. He said it was a thermal contraction or expansion of one for the ribs on the serpintine belt. One of these weekends, I might try some belt dressing and see if it cures it.
I tried playing around with some of the vacuum operated valves in the airbox without any help. I even thought it might be the snorkel in the fender, a resonance thing. Disconnected that and no help. The belt is the only thing that makes sense. I don't think its the SAI pump either.

Hi there. The problem you are describing sounds like an issue I am experiencing too. I have a 2004 A8L. I can hear the same whistling noise when the car is first started. Mine tend to happen at idle and disappears around 1600rpm. I popped the hood as it was making the noise, and it seemed to come from the air filter area. I'm not real good with cars, so I don't know what the technical term is, however the noise was certainly coming from the housing leading to the air filter.
I'm quite interested in the outcome. The noise is embarassing coming from a "luxury" car. By luxury I mean it has alot of expensive problems.
