Default 96A4Q2.8 Stalling

Hi Folks,

I have a 96 A4 Quatro with the 2.8 Recently she started doing something a bit odd. She runs fine on start and if I drive is locally stays that way. On my way home from work I get on the highway right away and go about 20 miles at around 80. As I come off the ramp and put in the clutch the RPM's drop like a stone. sometimes she bounces around 500 or even 100 rpm's but often it goes right out. If it stays runnign it does the same thing for the rest of the way home. If I shut it off and restart it seems to be cured for the time being.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Very peculiar, indeed....

Have you found any DTC's in the ECM? I would think it would throw a code. The OBD diagnostics are somewhat weird in that under certain circumstances even a "problem" occurrs the Executive (the part of OBD that controls the code flagging) may require more than one drive cycle to report, or flag, the problem.

It's still worth a try-- using a scanner. And furthermore if there is a component failure DTC's will be set for them too-- hypothetically. Good idea to check both, and not rely only on DTC's.

If the problem persists, it's likely a symptom of a fuel or ignition problem, and things like catalytic damage may occur-- just be prepared for more problmes and costs if the source issue isn't sorted sooner than later.

Good luck,

ever get your problem figured out???

Check your plugs... have you changed them lately? how many miles are on them? Possibly the O2 sensors. Check throttle body for build up.
