Default A3 Engine Shut Down

I bought a 2002 A3 about 5 months ago and on the way to work the other day it just died. The dealer has told me that the water pump seized and detroyed the timing belt. As far as I thought the water pump and the timing belt really shouldn't effect each other. Can someone please tell me if my dealer telling me the full story or not? The timing belt is on warranty but they are telling me that wasn't the first thing to fail.
If any one can give me an idea of how the water pump can kill the timing belt, I would love to know.

The Timing belt drives the water pump. How many miles on the engine and when was the belt and water pump last changed.

The car has just done 100,000km. They timing belt was changed just before I bought it but the water pump wasn't. Should they have changed that as well?
