What type is recommended?

I picked up a new/used (78k miles) transmission yesterday.
Before installing the trans, is there anything I should do to it?
Once installed, would you drop the pan, check fluid and change filter, then top of the fluid?
(What parts are needed? Trans pan gasket, filter, fluid)?
