Default Abnormal Winter starting

This is my first winter with my 95 Audi 90 CS. 134K All records since new. Nice car. It's recently gotten very cold here (0-20 degrees F) and I notice now when I start it that the starter doesn't kick in right away. I turn the key and nothing happens for the first few seconds, just a very distant hum/grind/whir (a lot like when you try to start a car with a dead battery or something) and then after a few seconds of that sound, the starter finally kicks in and she starts right up. The previous owner just had a new starter put in less than 20,000 miles ago. Any ideas? Is this something that could leave me stranded? Thanks for your help.

I would have the battery tested.
