I pulled the o2 sensor from the drivers side header and started the motor with no change, so that ruled out a blocked cat.

The ignition module is fine and I found the problem............big *** air leak! The gasket for the EGR didn't seat correctly. I went round the motor with a can of carb cleaner and stalled it out when I hit the EGR.

I checked all connections, fittings and hoses etc one more time, cleared the fault codes, then fired it up.

It settled into a nice idle in less than 10 seconds. I ran it up to running temp (radiator fans kicking in) and there were no leaks, knocks etc. I even got the tranny warm enough that I could correctly level off the fluid. (I changed the filter and fluid out a while ago, just never been able to run the thing up to temp to level it correctly)

I stopped and started it a few times but still no codes, so fingers crossed all is well in my little Audi world :-)

I'll know for sure when I can drive it. I still have a few smaller jobs to do before that happens though, but compared to getting it running correctly, they're minor!
