Buying a 97 A4 1.8 auto
Hi!
I am new to the Audi world, and I have a couple questions. I have tried my best to use the search option but I have not quite found the info I seek. So here are the issues, the car has 107k miles and the motor was replaced with a new engine at about 68k. It has what looks like a slight power steering reservoir leak. Also the ignition key will stick in the "start" position having to manually rotate the key back. But the one I guess “major” issue is that the top of the exhaust manifold where is mounts to the turbo is cracked pretty good, you can audibly hear the leak when you start rolling. So to sum it up my main question is, how hard is it to replace the manifold, and do you need any "special" tools for the job. I am pretty competent but I only have experience working on BMW's and Mini's. Thanks for any info you guys might have

Hello there,
I'm not a mechanic and so can't help you with anything technical, tho' I can tell you there's a lot of A4's for sale out there and the one you're looking at right now doesn't sound top of the list!
Practical advice?.........oh....walk away

Well i havent seen the car but if your confident that it runs and is reliable dont worry too much about the manifold if you can visibally see the crack fill it in with jb weld, but if you want a manifold replaced altogether then go on ebay and buy one for less than 50 bucks. then get a repair manual and do an easy swap.
I'm brand new here too so take this advice with a grain of salt -- If you've worked with BMW's and Mini's then I'd assume an Audi couldn't be much worse. Pick up a Chilton's at some store and browse through it quick to see if there's anything 'special' needed to be done, if not I'd just guess it'd be a simple bolt-off/bolt-on process.
