Default Engine Oil Type

I'm about to do an oil change on a 2000 Audi A6 2.8L. What type of oil should I use? Synthetic or conventional? Weight? I live in central NY if that makes a difference.

Fully Synthetic! Mobile makes 0w-30 for european cars. 5W-30 is also fine overall. Living in NY does make a differance because you are exposed to cold weather. That's what the first number is about. 0w or 5w are extreamly thin at start up for the high tech tight spec 30v engine you have. If the car is high in miles and has had a diet of conventional oil I would stay conventional as to not start freeing up deposits left over time.
