Default Excessive rear Tire wear on 2000 S4 (B5 – 2.7 Turbo, manual) Quattto?

I had 4 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 fitted and aligned 6000 miles ago. I had my car MOT tested (UK safety test) and it failed on rear tread. By the time I got back, they had taken my tires off and when I asked to see them, I was presented with tires that were down to the metal on the inside… Has anybody come across this – or have they switched the tires and ripped me off?
Thanks.

Sounds like an issue with toe. The fact that the inside edges are worn sounds like a bit of negative camber and either toe out or toe in. The fact that you had it recently aligned would lead me to believe that either they did alamejob on the alignment or that you're suspension bushings or something is worn...probably leading the wheels gaining toe under load.

I doubt they have a set of worn sitting around in just your size hoping someone willhappen by to be cheated, nor do I think they would go to all the trouble to shave or grind your tires down to the cords to get you to buy some more. It's more likely that the tires were worn when you came in, and that your car needs some alignment or suspension work to keep from eating tires.

Just a guess on my part though.

Thanks for your thoughts pms… and I’m not usually a conspiracy theorist, but I checked the tires fairly regularly for the first 3000 miles to make sure they were wearing well, and the rears seemed near new (far better than the front). When told I needed new tires,I asked them to keepmy oldtires (being suspicious) and they “forgot” to put then in the boot. I had to go down later to check them.

I asked the mechanics about the excessive wear when I saw them, and was told it is normal for a big heavy V8… I corrected him that it’s a 6. So much for advice from the ‘experts’… I will keep an eye on the wear and get it looked at (somewhere else)if I notice any wear.

Cheers.
