Default Heater issue on 2005 A6

On an intermittent basis, the outside vents will blow super hot air. Cold air will blow in middle vents, but outside vents (driver and passenger) blow hot. I live in Dallas and this has happened on 100 degree days as well as 50 degree days. Very annoying. Unfortunately, it is an intermittent problem and is always working properly when I am near a dealer. The problem is not getting worse. Happens about once a week. Is this a common problem? Easy to fix? I will assume it will be expensive to fix.

Yes, pretty common issue. There is a valve that regulates coolant flow under the hood in the cowl area. These go bad sometimes and cause erratic vent temperatures.

Thanks for the reply. But to be clear, both outside vents near the doors blow really hot air while the center console vents will blow cool air. Does your response still apply?

Yes, I would still look at replacing that heater valve and those symptoms you described are pretty common when that part fails.

Let me know how you make out.
