This whinning has beening going on for quite some time now....but getting worse. I just had my water pump and timing belt, etc done becuase the dealership said it was the water pump making the noise.

Still WHINES!!

The noise accelerates with the RPM but it sounds like it's coming from either the fan area or one of the belts in the front of the engine.

Can anyone give me any advice.

by the way......there is 80k on the engine.

 

Take off the serpintine belt and start the engine, if the noise goes away its somthing on the belt drive system, probably the clutch fan.

 

I had issues with a clutch fan on mine, Sounds real similar to your problem. Does it make the noise at idle as well?

 

yes. but the sound will change to a lower sounding Whine when i turn the AC/fan on.

 

that's because the revs drop with the A/C on, im guessing you have a bad pulley bearing

 

how much, if any, damage can i do if i let that go?

 

the bearing will seize and the serp belt will snap then your in deep ( depending on how bad the noise is )

 

Can someone tell how i could go about narrowing down the suspected pully's in question?

Take a spray bottle with some water in it. spray the pulleys, when the noise goes away that is the pulley.
