I don't know about $250 for a MAF since I've havnt bought one yet. But I have cleaned mine. To replacde it you need to open up the box that encloses the air filter. You should see the sensor inside. Some tabs or something hold it in place. Pop it out and put the knew one in. Make sure you dont contaminate the sensor but touching it or anything else. Should make a nice difference.

$250 at the dealer sounds high though some Audi dealers have MSRP + x%- called volumetric pricing- Retail SHOULD be abt $210 at the dealer and they are typically rebuilt by audi but there is no core charge. The unit in your car whether its an AEB or ATW engine is a Bosch- We get abt $168.00 for the air mass meter.
The replacement is pretty easy. Pull the WHOLE air box and remove the top half. You CAN take the top half of the air box off with the bottom half still in the car but it can be difficult to get at the rear clip close to the fire wall. The air mass meter is fastened on the inside with 2 screws- may be phillips head or torx bit- probably a torx but i've seen both. HIGHLY reccomend a new air filter when you replace the MAF and vacume debris from the air box.

On my car (2000 a4 1.8t) the engine type is engraved on the engine - in the front, above the timing belt, just sticking out past the engine cover. There are other easy ways to tell such as the VIN number.
