I just bought a used 2007 A4 with 49,000 miles on Monday night (4 days ago). On my way home from work yesterday, I noticed that the indicator for worn brake rotors appeared. I'm not happy. That either means the dealership knowingly sold me a car with worn brakes, they wear down INCREDIBLY fast, the detector is wrong, or the detector warns me really early because my brakes feel fine and I don't hear any squeaks or other noises.

How much does it typically cost to get this repair performed?

The warning does tend to come on early (long before they need to be changed). I drove for 2 months with a brake wear warning. The "detector" is simply a wire running through the pad that breaks a circuit when it wears through and sets off the warning.

It is possible that the battery is going bad as well, as this can cause a brake warning light to go off.

Repair costs depend on what exactly is wrong.

That's good to know. Thanks. Is there any way to turn off the indicator in the meantime so I don't have to stare at a circle with a couple of curved lines surrounding it?

you can clear the code with a VagCom, but it will only come back.

I'd just pull the wheels off and see how far down the brake pads are worn.
