K&N Cold air intake for A4
I want to add a CAI to my 97 2.8L A4 and am wondering if the K&N CAI is a true Cold Air Intake? It doesnt look like it comes with a engine heat shield or diverts far enough from the engine to suck in mostly cool air.
If its just a high flow filter that sits in your stock air box then no, its not a true CAI. It will give you slightly better flow, but no more cold air into your engine. You can always do the airbox mod, thats about as close as you'll get to a CAI without actually buying a true CAI.
i have the intake for the 2.8...its not a true CAI...it uses the stock intake hose and just puts it over to the side a little bit more...im thinking of fabing a heat shield out of aluminum and painting it with silicon but im not sure where to mount it. i dont know how much gain you get from it but it makes the engine sound much more aggressive when driving and it does feel like it pulls a little more at highway speeds and helps a little bit for the dead spot in the rpm range
Thanks LabattZ, do you have this one installed? Was wondering how the electronics fit on their adapter? I have read that some CAI adapter pipes require some modification to refit the electronic module.

nah, i just got my 2.8 a week or so ago. Still doin the research bit at this point. But atleast this one provides a shroud and bracket. But there's still no direct airflow for the "CAI" to gobble up.
A drop-in K&N and the airbox hack looks to be a more logical solution.
I think this just uses the intake port for the std airbox for cold air. I am thinking about trying to route an xtra pipe from under the headlight to the filter area. That TEK setup looks like a good place to start at least it shields some of the engine heat.
