For $650 it might pay to go 45 minutes north.
Sergey does good work at reasonable prices.

Wow, that much for parts - where are you looking for them? Most of the common places that many members here use (PureMS, ECS, GermanAutoParts) offer timing kits (at least for the 2.8) for $250-300. I can't imagine the 3.0 would be that much more expensive.

Sergey owns Edge Motors.
He welded a new flex pipe to repair my exhaust. It took about 4 hours
and he charged me $200 with the part. He replaced my secondary air hose,
and a valve for the vacuum brake booster. He also repaced the themostat.
He is very busy, and it's not easy finding a parking space up there.
Call for an appointment.

Sounds like a good reco, thanks Crazyhawk. As for parts prices, I keep hearing that everything having to do with the 3.0 V6 is a hassle. A dealer on LI quoted me $1500 to do the belt, but some Audi shop guy on the forum mentioned $3,000 not being unheard of, which is absurd. The car's only worth $9,000
I'm about to drive the car cross country to LA so thinking I should have the belt done beforehand as the car is at 72,000mi
