Default loud noise

Help!
I'm a new owner of a pre-owned TT (2001) and in the last couple of weeks began hearing what I thought was extreme road noise coming from the backend of the car. This seems to get progressively louder the faster I drive. I've had the tires rotated thinking that was the problem but that didn't seem to help at all. Now I know that these low profile high performance tires will make more noise that your standard tire but something's not right. I can hardly hear myself think over this noise. Before I run to the dealership like the paraniod female that I am, I wanted to know if this was a common occurance for the TT or if I really should run to the dealer.
Any thoughts?
Thanks, Deb
