not sure on the 98 a6s but i kinda had the same problem with thte idle jumping around on idle and the car often just dropping low and cutting out. i cleaned the MAF sensor, replaced teh vac lines and pulled out and cleaned the idle control valve. this really seems to have stabilized the car. the RPMs still jump around but its +/- 50 RPM instead of the stuff before. try this it may help, also i have a 12v V6 im not sure if the 30V v6 had a ICV but i know a vac line and a dirty MAF can cause these symptoms.

a little cheat to stop the EGR forever,

find the efending item and blank it off this must be done when engine is cold and key not even turned on ( if you turn the key the system will find it ) if its blanked it will bypass it and no codes will be regitered,

its simple to clean them by unbolting the offendor and scrape the carbon off

I have a 96 a6 avant that constantly had a cel for the low flow 'egr valve'. there is a great write up in other audi forum that i used as a guide. it worked perfectly. there was so much carbon build up the passage was completely blocked. cleaned the tb as well, car runs much better now and no cel.

saudi, do a search for egr valve and you will find my other posts with the link.
