Hey All,

I've got a 1996 A4 with 170k on it. 2.8, 12-valve V6, 5 speed. Great car! Bought it new.

Question: The power steering is howling when cold. I top off the p.s. hydraulic fluid often, and replaced the steering rack about 4 years ago. The howling seems to lessen or go away once the car warms up. --- I hope it's the power steering pump, because if it's a bad rack it's not worth fixing again. Also, the power steering fluid mysteriously goes down --- where does it go? This car has always burned oil like a Sherman Tank, but p.s. fluid? Very strange!

Any help would be appreciated!
