No heat blowing out!
I have a 1996 Audi a4 heat issue. It has the 2.8l engine in it. Last winter my heat vent and AC worked fine, and then summer came along I had an issue with the blower motor going out, and time after time just with a little bump where the climate box is (under the glove box,) then it would come back on. Eventually it went out and I had to break down and buy a new blower motor, and I changed it out myself, it blew AC just fine! Now winter is coming around the corner and I put on the heat ( guess what) no heat! But the air blows just fine! Im thinking it might be a lot of things from the brain box, from some flap just not flipping over, or if there is a sensor somewhere (hopefully easily to locate if so) to change out. But im hoping of the more likely thing before I go tearing under my dash again.. Besides its tough on a girls nails to do.! Can anyone help out a girl who works on drives an Audi and works on her own car? oh any by the way the control unit face all of the display doesnt show, but it still works fine (atleast i think so)
could be one of two things:
1) the heat door is not opening. does it blow really cold like a/c and then not so cold like no a/c when the heat is on? if not then with the key on and engine off, stick your head under the dash and turn the heat from hot to cold and see if you can hear a motor operating. actually if its vacuum operated youll have to have the car on and probably wont hear anything.
2) the heater core is blocked. there will be 2 coolant lines going from the engine compartment thru the firewall to the heater core. with the car running and hot, carefully reach over and touch the lines. if one is hot and one is cold then the heater core is blocked. turn the car off and let it cool down. pull the lines off the engine and stick a hose nozzle in one of the and shoot some water through it to nock out the blockage. then fill and burp the coolant.
thats my 2 cents

i noticed tonight that i had the heat on low then i turned it to high and i got a blast of heat breefly, then it went to cold, im thinking that 'that' motor is not working... and im feeling that this is going to be a pain in the ***. any quick fix knowladge?? im a small chick who likes to break my nails in more pleasuarable places other than the dash of my car..
[sm=drooldude.gif]wow, ummm...phew, yea cars arent pleasurable...uhhhh oh ok back to my train of thought...problem is that its not likely that there is a motor, unless you know it has a motor for sure, most vehicles use a vacuum operated solonoid to open the heat door. not fun to replace, usually dash has to be pulled to access the hvac carrier module, unless your lucky. maybe you can remove some of the under-dash trim and get down there with a light and see if you can see anything. if it looks like little ***** with hoses going in and rods coming out, those are the vacuum soloniods and you need to determine which one works that door. did you feel the heater hoses to be sure there was no blockage. maybe you could bring it over and have me look at it, im sure we could work something out [8D]
Does the temperature guage read in the middle? If there
is air in the antifreeze, it has to be bled. You might try removing
the cabin air filter, and spraying silicone into the intake with the
heater and fan on. Ventilate the car, and be careful this stuff
is flammable.

well, the temp stays right at the middle, i noticed again that heat does come out at low fan speeds. but it isnt enought to keep the lights off, on cold nights if you know what i mean. where is the vacuum servos locaited? could it be something that i jared while shoveing the blower motor back in? and could it be a quick fix (temp or not temp) without tearing my dash all apart? heck im a busy girl, time to work on cars is limited! i need a new climate control box that lights up compleately if anyone knows where to get one cheaper than ebay... (toobad junkyards aroung here have no audis!)
Your best bet would be to find someone with a VAG tool and have them run the adaptations in your climate control module. If something doesnt check out while doing that, then you might have 1. a broken servo motor for your heater flap, 2. a broken servo motor arm that is not opening your heater flap.
If the adaptations check out ok, look under your hood by those heater hoses and see if there is a valve there that allows coolant to flow into the heater core. It may not be working like it should. If there isn't a valve there, You may have a blocked up heater core (which sucks) or a water pump problem. I would check on the adaptations first then go from there.

Was the car ever low on coolant?? Was the coling system opened for any repairs??? Possibly an Air Pocket In The heater core. Sometimes it can be a real pain to get the air out. If you have heat at low fan speeds %90 that the doors are working. Try holding the idle Up @2000 with the heat on & see if it starts to get warm. If it does there is an air pocket or a flow problem. If that results in no warm air than you will need to get your hands on a scan tool.
Ive got the same problem but did a little investigating. If you pull off the lower dash panel on the driver side and look underneath toward the middle you'll see the heater flap actuator. Adjust the temp from LO to HI and you'll see it move. If it doesn't, that could mean either the servo motor is shot or the control panel is busted. Pray its the control panel. Might be more expensive but a heck of a lot easier to replace. It's worse for me though since all that is working. The problem is somewhere else. I took my car to a dealer and they say its the thermostat. Of course, in order to get to the $10 thermostat takes the same labor as replacing the timing belt and water pump. ($1000) Unless you're an experienced mechanic, or dont mind spending 2-3 days working on the thing -- and probably screwing it up -- take it to a shop. Good luck!
