oil consumption question?
I bought brand new a 2006 A6 v-8 quattro in 2006. The dealer changed my oil at 5000, and again at 10,000 however at he 10,000 they put oil in for a V6 which is about 2.75 quarts low. I drove the car for about 30 miles (city drive) and the oil pressure light came on the same day. I didn't drive it any further and had it flatbeded to the dealer where we figured out they made a mistake. They said it would be fine. I had another oil change at 15,000. Now at 19,000 miles my min oil light comes on and its 1.5 quarts low. I took it to the dealer and they said its not leaking just normal oil consumption they state 1 quart per 3500 miles. My question is what is normal oil consumption and how could you test it? And wouldn't my oil consumption be higher on highway driving. My driving is mostly city driving about 35mph about 10 miles each way to work. I guess I' worried that my engine was damaged when it was low on oil and now its starting to show. They rec. oil change every 10,000 miles and my estimation it would be 3 quarts of oil between changes. . Thanks in advance. Sorry about the length.

Your car should not be consuming oil, I know newer cars state that you should change your oil every 5000 miles but i will always change it every 3 thousand. It prevents gaskets drying out or soaking in dirty oil and will remove more contaminants. You also want to be careful not to over fill it. If you put too much oil in and start her up, the pressure will be so high it will leak out of the crank case into the transmission and severly damage it.
Id say get that oil changed every 3 months or 3,000 miles...it would save you a lot of trouble.

Audi's DO "use" oil a little ore than an average car due to low piston tension..... just check it frequently man ..... if it's not leaking and it's not truly burning it then is it really just "comsumption". IMHO
